Aran sweaters are part of our history and traditionally linked with the fishing industry of days gone by due to the lanolin which is naturally found in sheeps wool as this helped to provide a cosy warm and weaterproof layer to wear.
Years later we still favour aran wool although lanolin isn't necessary because of our warmer homes & waterproof clothing it is now removed during the production of commercial yarns.
We still think of aran wool or yarn with cabled garments and accessories & here are some interesting facts about traditonal aran patterns
the honeycomb design is said to bring good luck
cables indicate fishing ropes, which signify the tools of an industrious worker
diamond stitches represent the mesh of the fishing nets, wishing wealth & fortune
The choice of aran wool is immense both yarn content & the variety of colours & textures too.
